Passport America is a membership program that allows recreational vehicle users to stay at half price at more than 1,450 campgrounds in North America for a fee.
Many RV users say the program, which costs $44 a year to join, is a money-saver, especially for frequent campers. The discounts are offered on a space availability basis at campgrounds in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Some parks allow members to use Passport America year-round, but many have blackout dates.
Those limited dates can make it difficult to find a campground that accepts Passport America during high-volume camping dates, such as Memorial Day, Fourth of July or Labor Day. So it’s important for members to check ahead.
RV users also say that it is hard to find participating Passport America campgrounds near certain tourist hot spots and in remote destinations. The amount of time a Passport America member can stay at a campground at a discounted rate is determined by the campground. Each park is individually owned and operated.
Passport America does not put a limit on how often you can use the card. Tourists from other countries also are eligible to purchase memberships.
Some of the campgrounds recommend Passport America members make reservations and others require them. That information is available in a directory Passport America offers members. Passport America also has a trip planning app that allows users to type in a destination and any criteria and it maps out parks along the way. The app is available to non-members.
Members also receive an online subscription to the RV America quarterly magazine.
Members who purchase a multi-year subscription save even more. A two-year Passport costs $79 and a three-year Passport costs $109.
RV owners have options for other membership discounts choices. Good Sam Club, which starts at $29 a year, offers 10 percent discount at nearly 2,100 campgrounds as well as savings on gasoline and diesel at select Pilot Flying J stations, emergency towing and roadside assistance.
